Is There A Downside To The EEEPc?

The size of all EeePC is about the size of a portable DVD player. It is light weight to carry and has a compact built. It is also cheap. But is does have a few negatives.

None of the models have an optical device nor do they have a DVD or CD drive. All these components can be installed at an extra cost.

All users complain that the keyboard is small and this does take time getting used to. Individuals who type fast or those who have fat fingers will definitely have to slow down otherwise, double keying is common. Fortunately the devices were never meant for typing or word processing. For the majority who simply use the device to send or check e mails, browse the web and type a small letter, the computer will do just great. The touchpad and the single mouse button are sufficient for this machine.

A minor negative is the very short shelf life of the battery – the 4 batteries last about 2.5 -3 hours. But this is no different from the standard laptops. And almost everywhere in America, there are electrical outlets where you can recharge.

Because the computer is run on the Linux based system, one can not run windows programs. This is no longer an issue as the latest models do offer a windows XP option for an extra $ 40. The drivers for installation are provided when the device is bought.

Because of the 900 MHz and 512 MB memory, the computer is not as efficient as the standard laptops. When performing multiple functions (playing music or browsing photos) or stressing the system, the system, will let you know. The latest models even come with 4-20GB storage capacity and that has been a saving grace.

Once you know these negatives, then you can decide if you think the computer is worth it.
For children, it is excellent as it is sturdy and not fragile like the lap tops. Banging and dropping may destroy your laptop, but most EeePC will survive.

For the price of $199 and above, one cannot really ask for more.
