It’s a lot of bang for the buck, and it almost fits in your back pocket.  The Asus EEE PC provides the subnotebook solution that many busy, active, on the go people have been waiting for.

All of them have the Linux based operating system, but the later models do have an option for the windows XP.  The computer boots much faster than any other computer out there.  Within 10-19 seconds, one is up and running.  Depending on the model, the various software which comes on all models is Mozilla Firefox, Skype, Tux paint, Google docs, and many others.

Since all EeePC computers use a standard x86 processor, most PC operating systems can also be ported with minimal effort. Besides the Linux OS, one can have Xandros, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debain, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Over the years, there was some controversy regarding warranty if anyone tried to remove the sticker on the RAM access cover. Many people would like a bigger memory and now ASUS has released a statement that merely breaking the seal will not void the ASUS warranty.

All EeePC models come with 3USB ports, MMC/SD card reader, Ethernet port and WiFI. The price of the lower models starts at $199 and the upper end models cost anywhere from $500-600.

Compared to the 700 series, the latest computers have a slightly bigger screen but weigh less than 1 kg.

Because of the compactness of the keyboard and difficulty typing fact, the computer has an excellent scroll and zoom feature- all done with two fingers. The Linux version is called the EeePC 900 and comes with a 20 GB SSD, while the Windows XP version is called the EeePC 900 Win and has a 12 GB SSD. When one buys the windows version, it comes with Microsoft works and Windows live suite already installed.

Both the 900 series have a 1.3 mega pixel webcam and 1GB of RAM. For the business traveler and the college student, this is an outstanding buy

Installing the windows XP program on any of the Asus EeePC models does not take time.  Once the PC is started, one should insert the Asus support DVD to install the driver which is very quickly done.

Because the EeePC has only a 4GB SSD there is little room left and this as the manual says, you have to compress the hard drive space.  Once this is done, you will still be left with enough space for whatever else you need. For additional space, you may also use your SD/SDHC card slot.

Other standard features of all EeePC are the three USB 2.0 ports, LAN, WiFI, VGA output and headphone/microphone connections. And you are all set to go.

Over the last few years, Asus has become more well known because of the release of its Laptop notebook, the EeePC which has a 7 inch screen. The computer has all the necessary hardware built in to function as an efficient computer, the computer operates on the Linux based operating system and the EeePC stands for Easy to learn easy to work and easy to play.

There are various different models of EEE PC available. All of them can also work on batteries which have a shelf life of about 2.5 -3 hours. All EeePC have a built in Wifi which automatically detects wireless signals from any hot spot. These solid state computers come in sizes of 2-8 GB.

For the future, there is talk that Microsoft and Asus will combine to make versions of the Windows 7 optimized platform.  These new Atom-based Eee PCs will be available for show at the next Computex meeting in Taiwan, at the end of this month. There is word that EeePC  models with WiMax will be shipped in the latter part of 2008. The availability of better and more efficient models of EeePC no longer go for $200 but now average about $400 and above.

Word from Asus is that all most every part of the C90 can be upgraded including the hard drive, memory and graphics card.

The C90 is not available directly from ASUS but is being sold by various other retailers who will sell it in various levels of upgrades. At some of the latest computer shows, the C90 white book has been shown to have the capability of having all the latest hardware on it and functioned great.

The great thing about the C90 is that it will allow the consumer to improve the computer flexibility with import newer technology in future.

The computer comes with a much faster 1.6 GHz diamondville processor and also has Bluetooth capability. Other added features include a 1GB RAM, memory slot card and 20 BG storage for the Linux system (12 GB if you have the windows system).

As with previous EeePC models, the battery life is again a bit of a controversy. Asus claims that the 901 model will have a longer shelf life of close to 4-6 hours- but time will tell. In Taiwan, another added feature to the 901 series is the WiMax. However, in North America there is still confusion whether the WiMax equipped EeePC will be available anytime soon. The cost of the 901 EeePC is not known but one should expect to pay anywhere from $600-$700.

The second complaint by most users is that they keyboard is very cramped. Typing two keys is a common error. However, one has to be reminded that this PC was never manufactured for work processing but as a mini lightweight computer to be used for travel. At home, one can also plug into a larger monitor via the external VGA port but this is not practical when traveling. Similarly one can also add a mouse and a keyboard, but that was not meant to be a feature of the computer anyway. Plus this adds more stuff to be carried with you. If that is the case, then one should just take the regular laptop,
And finally all Asus EeePC run on Linux based operating system. All the latest models offer an option for Windows XP software and so this is only a minor flaw.
Despite the minor negatives of the Asus EeePC, this notebook functions exceptionally well. It is best suited for the average computer user who wants to browse, surf, read and send some e mails. And the majority of us only do that.

All the models have built in wireless networking and no external card is required to detect the signals. Individuals who have used the EeePC claim that the wireless network is powerful and can instantly pick up signals.

Just like the standard laptop, the EeePC has the ability to play both music and video. However, the computer does slow down when both are played together. The sound quality of the inbuilt speakers is decent. For portable use, the computer does require AA batteries which provide a shelf life of about 2.5-3 hours.
The initial models of EeePC only had 512 MB of RAM. However, all the latest models can be upgraded to 2GB. Because there is no storage capacity, all EeePC have three USB ports and an SD slot. One can even get add on an extra 8 GB SD card for extra storage.
And no one can beat the price for an EeePC subnotebook. For a 2GB, you can expect to pay less than 300.

Every one of the EeePC models is small and light weight. They can be carried almost anywhere. Unlike the regular laptops, they are almost 1/3rd the size and easy to carry. They can be placed on the things, on the arm rest or even on a small book and you are ready to work.

The solid state drive in all of the models has meant that there are no revolving parts, the machine is a lot faster to start and can take a thump. Unlike the regular laptops, the EeePC are sturdy and very durable. The solid state components have made the computer extremely fast. Unlike the standard computers which take ages to start, the EeePC starts in a matter of seconds and switches off just as fast. This essentially means that you can immediately shut down the computer and rush off to whatever you want to go- and do not forget to take the notebook with you.
